Myspace Goes Red On This Thanksgiving

Pete Cashmore reports in mashable that Myspace has got a red background and copious amounts of ads for Project (RED) today. The initiative, backed byU2 singer Bono, aims to promote socially conscious buying - it was also supported by a “roadblock” on MTV today, which included a 90 second (RED) ad.
The project is raising money to distribute anti-viral medications to AIDS victims in Africa by asking people to choose products from brand partners like American Express, Converse, Gap and Motorola, plus (RED) credit cards, phones, shoes and clothes. If you’re a tech addict, you couldn’t have missed the fact that there’s now a red iPod, too. With this media saturation, they’re trying to turn Black Friday, the biggest shopping day of the year in the US, into “Red Friday”, they say. MySpace users are encouraged to add the “Join Red” page to their list of friends, and about half a million people already have. In an inspired piece of MySpace marketing, they’re also offering a custom red MySpace layout, plus banners and more bling to decorate your page. You’ll remember that Dasani did a similar thing a few months back, offering custom MySpace layouts with their “Fruit Signs” branding.

Generating Traffic from Myspace

Well, this post is not about becoming the next Myspace, but its about how you can build traffic by leveraging the might of Myspace. Infact Myspace has played a key role in the activating many web1.0 websites, and has played a crucial role in integrating web1.0 and web2.0 I came across this fantastic post on how internet companies are harnessing the immense oppurtunity to built quality traffic by feeding the Myspace beast.
The best thing about Myspace is that it provided user generated content. Unlike traditional internet properties Myspace provides an ideal platform to get a mashed up feed from highly unlikely sources .

Last week Forbes looked at the cottage industry around customized
MySpace layouts, if we focus on services and other sources that feed into MySpace via so-called “MySpace codes” and web widgets, we could see the real effects of how Myspace has actually created a big industry in and around itself . Its like what the Auto majors have so succesfully done it in the past, when one manufacterer used to set up a manufacturing base and other auto ancillaries provided them logistics, system and support infrastructure. A search for Myspace layouts on Google shows more than 7 million Search Results .

PhotoBucket,Imageshack and Youtube and 123greetings are a few among them to take advantage of this Myspace Beast. Photobucket gets more than 80% of its trafic due to Myspace . Myspace provides an ideal opportunity for media companies to take their branding to the most happening and crowded place on the internet. Myspace has actually provided companies to leapfrog into viral marketing mode by actually allowing companies to make their users a part of their marketing component. One of the most apparent reasons of popularity of Youtube is that its allows its users to distribute their created content by embedding their codes and making them movable.

What if you cant make the next Myspace? You can generate targetted traffic by being a part of the Myspace and feeding the beast.

The Myspace Phenomenon

Nothing on the internet has attracted as much eyeballs and curiosity as Myspace.com. This social networking site has managed to revive memories of the hey days of Internet era before the dotcom bust. Tom Anderson and Chris Dewolfe founded Myspace in 2003 and has never looked back since then. Although the site started out as a place for musicians and artists to connect with one another, it has gradually morphed into an online hot spot, and its popularity now easily dwarfs that of others of its kind. The users, the hardest core being teens and twentysomethings, post profiles and decorate them with photos, music, video clips, blogs, The site is home to more than 2.2 million bands, 8,000 comedians, thousands of filmmakers, well known brands who wants to understand teen Psychology and millions of striving, attention-starved wannabes - 100 million, actually. MySpace passed that number of registered users in early August 2006, and on a typical day, it signs up 230,000 - roughly the population of Scottsdale. A year ago in march 2005 it passed Google in terms of traffic, and now MySpace ranks second to Yahoo in page views, with one billion daily, according to ComScore Media Metrix.

MySpace,is the most popular social networking site and accounts for 82% of traffic in the category, according to Hitwise, a leading Web site tracker. Facebook,Xanga and My Yahoo makes up the rest of the major players.

Myspace began as a social-networking site along the lines of Friendster. That same year, industry-leader Friendster had a major technology setback -- it couldn't keep up with its increased traffic. During peak hours, the site slowed to a crawl, or users just got DNS errors and couldn't access the site at all. Tons of Friendster users got fed up and ended up migrating to MySpace through word-of-mouth, which began with the founders' own friends and MySpace employees, along with some media promotion through Intermix, the company that owned a controlling share in MySpace at the time. When Anderson and DeWolfe noticed that musicians and music fans were utilizing MySpace more than any other single group, they created MySpace Music, and the site's traffic skyrocketed.

MySpace is nothing short of a cultural phenomenon. For those who haven't logged on, the site is the online equivalent of your high school lunchroom where you hang out , meet friends, relax and express yourselves. It’s provides a platform for teens and young adults to make themselves heard ,helps them to socialize with like minded friends who understands their Language .In less than two years, MySpace.com has morphed from unadvertised haven for young bards to share their musical talents to a youth-oriented social networking phenomenon with upwards of 32 million registered members. The insight into the young mind has never been so accessible.
